Transition Greenspaces – February Update

Posted on 22 February 2021

Not much happening over the past month at the Triangle, apart from a bit of tree pruning and sorting out the pond.

Our wonderful volunteers have (in socially distanced pairs or alone) been repairing beds and plant cages and have added some plants to the pond. They’ve also added more woodchip to the pathways, kept things weeded and watered, and done some work on the forest garden beds. The plants in the polytunnel are coming along nicely now, as the bitterly cold weather has subsided, and our first salad crops of the year are almost ready to harvest.

We hope, once we are out of lockdown, that we can start having small, socially distanced groups there again. In the meantime if anyone fancies raising some veg plants from seed at home, we’d be glad of them once it warms up a bit.

Another very busy Repair Cafe on Saturday. Our wonderful repairers never fail to amaze us by mending things that they've been told cannot be mended, or have been quoted astronomic sums for a potential repair, when it actually takes 20 minutes to sort it out!

Sadly it's not possible to mend everything that's brought in but it's always worth coming along to check stuff out. Please always think before you throw!

Great service for the community as well as the environment! 👏🏻

Well done everyone

Really good group at Climate Resilience Centre Worthing - CREW on Saturday for our workshop about practical ways to reduce flood risk and pollution from surface water run off. Lisa and I covered making rain gardens and storm water planters to slow the flow, Ryan shared details of using harvested rainwater to flush a loo and Vernon explained how to build soakaways and add one-way valves to drains to prevent sewage water backing up into properties during flooding. See Transition Town Worthing CIC website Resources for handouts and a You Tube film on building rain gardens. And pop into CREW to add any locations of known flood risk spots to a flood risk map of Worthing and Lancing. ... See MoreSee Less

Busy month at our 2 community allotments, mending, planting, tidying and getting it all ready for spring planting. Yesterday we saw a baby slow worm, a peacock butterfly and the robins were around the whole time. ... See MoreSee Less

What a joy it is to run a repair cafe - there are some wonderful stories to share and it's so good to know that you are not only saving something from being dumped, but you are also bringing happiness into someone's life when their much treasured possessions are brought back to life. Do take a look through these photos and you will see what I mean. Our team of repairers are so talented - willing to try to fix most things and are really kind, helpful and good fun - what more could we wish for. ... See MoreSee Less
